The civil registration of births in the Cape Colony commenced only in 1895. Alfred Alexander was a professional engineer and a member of the
Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

In the baptismal record for Alfred William Courtney Alexander, you will
notice that his godparents, all by proxy, included H.M.Heyman. The baptism
took place at Christchurch, which was then a chapelry of the cathedral
parish of St George in Grahamstown.
